TAP

Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sound of one's tap shoes hitting the floor as a percussive instrument. As such, it is also commonly considered to be a form of music. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the dance, and is widely performed as a part of musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses more on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the jazz tradition. SCDPAC offers both styles within our classes. Levels beginning through advance.

JAZZ

Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet as it encourages grace and balance. Each class starts with a warm up, center floor work & across the floor combinations. Jazz is a combination of a variety of styles of dance: ballet, African dance, Musical Theater, Modern, and social dances. Jazz dance has a firm technique and strength base, allowing for individualized movement. Jazz is a great form of dance for any age, developing strength and flexibility. Students of jazz are strongly encouraged to study ballet simultaneously for the best possible jazz dance experience.

LYRICAL

Lyrical dance style has its primary basis in ballet, combining the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom and airier aspects of jazz, contemporary and modern dance. It is typically considered a sub-category of jazz and/or contemporary dance, the latter itself being an emerging category. Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality and emotion through movement. It is a combination of intricate, highly technical, and pedestrian/naturalistic moves. Lyrical will focus on bodylines, balance, and sustained extensions. Must have previous ballet experience. Students of lyrical are strongly encouraged to study ballet and Jazz simultaneously for the best possible lyrical dance experience. This is an intermediate to advance level only.

HIP HOP

Hip-Hop is a fast-paced and exciting class that introduces students to intricate popular movements to hip-hop beats and lyrics. The class may include breaking, popping, and locking. These skills transfer easily to such activities as cheerleading and gymnastics. Great addition to a well rounded dance schedule. Levels beginning through advance.

MODERN

Modern is explores the qualities of released and off-balance dancing while daring students to find disparate qualities of stillness and explosion. Students are encouraged to develop an individual style driven by their internal life and the specificity of their bodies. By researching movement tasks as opposed to recreating shapes, students will begin to solve kinesthetic problems in a profound and personal way. This is an intermediate to advance level only.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary dance is a popular form of dance which has since grown in the last decade to become one of the dominating performance genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical ballet, modern and jazz, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to utilize both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and modern dance's stress on the torso, and also employs contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance.

This is an intermediate to advance level only. Must be 8 years and older, must have at least one year of ballet, and must have instructors approval.
